Portable/wireless scanner selection criteria
Compare the complete field workflow, not just headline accuracy or whether the scanner has Wi-Fi.
Three meanings of wireless
- Distinct
- Standalone / wireless host / remote display
- Compare
- Complete scan-to-export task
TECHNICAL NOTES///
Compare the complete field workflow, not just headline accuracy or whether the scanner has Wi-Fi.
GOALRun the first test described in this guide and record the result for portable/wireless scanner selection criteria.
EQUIPMENT
- Scanner / mesh workflow
- Representative test model
- Measurement or inspection method
STEPS
- List typical object size, surface finish, ambient light, required detail and acceptable reconstruction time.
- Separate standalone scanning, wireless connection to a computer and phone remote display; determine which one is actually required.
- Ask for a demonstration on a representative object, including the underside and an interruption/restart.
- Compare complete cost: computer, battery, markers, spray, software, calibration and export rights. Record the exact model and software version.
TROUBLESHOOTING
- Resolution, repeatability and accuracy are different specifications. Wireless does not necessarily mean phone-only processing. A turntable-friendly desktop sample may not represent outdoor work.
