Gnome Reconstruction / Keeping the Character
The point was to recover the little sculpture's character, including its expression and gesture. After the initial repair, a second pass concentrated on rough surfaces inside the eyes, around the nose, and across the hands. The version-two image shows the whole model alongside close views of those changes. Both images are digital renders. The full-resolution scan, STL, and Blender project remain local rather than becoming large website downloads.
MDL-GNOME-001TECHNICAL NOTES///
Repairing a scanned gnome without sanding away its expression: rebuild the hat, refine the eyes and nose, and clean up the hands.
This is a scanned sculpture repair project, separate from the older Gnomie game in the archive.
The first repair restored a usable overall form, including the hat. Missing or unreliable scan detail had to be approximated, so the result is a reconstruction rather than an exact measurement of the original sculpture.
Version two focused on specific areas instead of applying another global smoothing pass. The rough inner eye surfaces became smooth rounded caps, leaving eyelids and eyebrows in place. The blank eye surfaces were intended to be suitable for painting later.
The nose was rounded and lightly smoothed while retaining nostrils. The backs of the hands, curled fingers, and small palm defects received a similar local cleanup. Those changes kept the gesture intact rather than replacing it with a different pose.
The saved validation report describes a single closed mesh and no detected self-intersections. The model is about 88.8 mm tall when its coordinates are read as millimeters. Those checks say something about the exported geometry, not about print supports, durability, or fidelity to every detail of the original.
For the website, the before-and-after renders carry the story. The large mesh and editable project stay local. A photograph of the first successful print will be the next meaningful addition.
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY///
Repaired the scanned gnome and preserved an earlier model render.
Refined the eyes, nose, and hand surfaces while keeping the pose and repaired hat.
Added the visual reconstruction story to the public archive.
SPECIFICATION///
RELEASED MATERIAL///
The final v2 model and matching validation report exist locally. The recorded checks found a connected closed mesh and no detected self-intersections. A successful physical print or painted result has not been documented.
The record keeps what is known at this revision. Unfinished tests stay unfinished here.
