Minnow tactics for crappie
Present a lively minnow slightly above likely crappie holding depth and minimize unnecessary movement. Tactics are starting approaches, not a live bite report. Check current access, posted restrictions, species limits, bait rules, weather and water advisories for the exact water before a trip.

GOALRun the first test described in this guide and record the result for minnow tactics for crappie.
PREPARATION / NOTES
Tactics are starting approaches, not a live bite report. Check current access, posted restrictions, species limits, bait rules, weather and water advisories for the exact water before a trip.
EQUIPMENT
- Rod and reel matched to the target species
- Hooks, line, sinkers, and landing tools
- Notebook or phone field log
MATERIALS
- Small live or artificial minnow
STEPS
- Locate brush, timber, dock edges or a depth break using permitted access.
- Use a small hook and only enough split shot to control the minnow under a slip float or vertical line.
- Hook through the lips for a forward-moving presentation or lightly behind the dorsal area without striking the backbone for a stationary one.
- Begin above the cover and adjust depth in small increments until bites establish the holding level.
TROUBLESHOOTING
- Keep bait cool and aerated and follow bait transport rules. Do not release unused minnows. Heavy tackle and constant jigging can defeat a natural presentation.
