Apollo: The Shadows That Became a Conspiracy

1969–1972; later hoax claims

Hoax claims contradicted by extensive evidence

Royal Museums Greenwich explains that perspective changes the apparent direction of parallel shadows and a horizontal support held the flag open. Camera exposure for the bright surface accounts for missing stars. The Apollo record also includes samples, scientific data and later orbital photographs of the landing sites. These lines of evidence support actual lunar landings, rather than a concealed studio production.

Why it stays with us

The unease comes from seeing a real environment that refuses familiar visual expectations. On the Moon, an ordinary photograph can resemble an impossible stage. This case is most revealing when the viewer slows down: a picture is evidence, but an intuitive reading of its lighting is not automatically a reliable account of how it was made.
