Dover Demon

The Dover Demon survives most clearly in a young witness’s drawing and later recollection. A brief roadside view gave it orange eyes, thin hands and a stubborn place in local memory.

The account

Bill Bartlett said he was driving along Farm Street in Dover on April 21, 1977, when his headlights caught something on a stone wall. In his later recorded recollection, its eyes reflected bright orange and thin hands gripped a rock. The look lasted seconds. Bartlett drew what he remembered, and other young people reported strange sightings around the same period. Investigator Loren Coleman gave the creature the name Dover Demon, attaching a permanent title to a very brief encounter.

Following the trail

The New England Legends episode includes Bartlett’s own retrospective account and reproduces his 1977 sketch. That is useful testimony, but a drawing made from memory is not a photograph or a specimen. The podcast also dramatizes portions of the broader story; those performed scenes are not treated here as additional eyewitness evidence. The sources establish the reported experience and its retelling, without identifying the animal or proving an extraordinary origin.

Why it stays with us

The stone wall makes the image difficult to dismiss from memory. It gives the hands something ordinary to hold and the viewer something ordinary to compare them with. The body remains unfamiliar because one small, practical gesture seems almost comprehensible.
