Hopkinsville Goblins

The Hopkinsville goblins entered the record through a frightened household’s police report. Small figures at the windows became one of the most persistent accounts of a rural home under siege.

The account

On August 21, 1955, Billy Ray Taylor and people at a farmhouse near Kelly, Kentucky, reported an extraordinary night. Taylor first described a bright object passing overhead. The group later said small figures with long arms and luminous eyes approached the house, appeared at windows and seemed unaffected by gunfire. Eventually, the occupants went to the Hopkinsville police station. Their account shifted the threat from a distant light in the sky to something just beyond the glass of a familiar room.

Following the trail

Smithsonian’s historical review records the report and the officers’ failure to find evidence of the alleged beings. The documented police visit is not confirmation that the household correctly identified what it saw. Later accounts and screen stories have elaborated the siege, so exact movements and creature numbers should not be reconstructed as settled facts. The case also helped inspire an abandoned Spielberg project that fed into the development of E.T.

Why it stays with us

The windows are what make this account linger. They usually let a household look outward while remaining separate from the night. In the reported siege, that relationship reverses: the darkness appears to be looking in, and the familiar walls no longer seem sufficient.
