Lagarfljot Worm

Iceland’s Lagarfljót worm appears in centuries of written accounts as islands, arches and an overturned boat. Its changing outline is almost as unsettling as its supposed size.

The account

The oldest account cited by Visit Egilsstaðir comes from an annal for 1345. Something in Lagarfljót reportedly resembled islands, then rose in enormous arches; neither head nor tail could be seen. In 1589, Bishop Oddur Einarsson described a back supposedly high enough for a sailing ship to pass beneath. Later accounts added smoke, ominous appearances and a shape like an overturned boat moving against the current. The creature never quite settles into one outline.

Following the trail

These are historical reports and inherited descriptions, not measurements of an identified animal. The tourism archive names the annals behind several episodes, making the history of the telling unusually traceable. Its spectacular dimensions and destructive movements remain claims within those texts. A medieval date establishes that a story was recorded then; it does not establish that the described body occupied the lake.

Why it stays with us

The missing head and tail give this legend its particular darkness. A witness sees separate pieces of an immense shape and supplies the body between them. Across the centuries, the lake keeps presenting a surface that can be read without being fully understood.
