Flannan Isles: The Light with No Keepers

December 1900

BACK IN THE DAYLIGHT

Following the trail

Documented disappearance; fatal-wave explanation probable

The Northern Lighthouse Board preserves Moore's letter and Superintendent Robert Muirhead's report. They describe damaged railings, missing equipment and evidence of powerful seas at the western landing. Muirhead considered a large wave sweeping the men away the most likely explanation. The Board presents this as the contemporary inference, not a witnessed reconstruction. Dramatic dialogue or ominous diary passages should not be added to these records.

Why it stays with us

A lighthouse stands for reliable human presence against an indifferent sea. Here the building remained while that presence vanished. The original reports are affecting because they are practical: coats, ropes, railings and the work of keeping the station operating. Their restraint gives the loss more weight than a supernatural embellishment could supply.
