The account
The condition sounds simple: build the fort, but do not let its shadow fall on the ascetic’s home. In one Bhangarh tradition, Baba Balau Nath agrees to construction only under that protection. A later ruler raises the building higher, the forbidden shadow crosses the boundary and ruin follows. The story makes destruction begin with something almost weightless. No army needs to appear in the moment of offence; the moving edge of shade is enough. A town’s abandoned buildings then become the visible remainder of a promise that architecture failed to keep.

A recorded story, with its history attached
Rajasthan Tourism preserves this as one of two popular local legends, alongside a separate story involving Princess Ratnavati and a sorcerer. Its account also describes the surviving gates, temples, marketplace and palace ruins. The curse narratives are explanations told about those remains, not archaeological demonstrations of their cause. Restrictions on visiting hours do not establish a supernatural danger.
Why it stays with us
The shadow version is especially memorable because the boundary can move without anyone touching it. Height, sunlight and a broken agreement become the machinery of a haunting, while the ruined town supplies its scale.
