The Lights beyond Brown Mountain

Long-running reports; twentieth-century investigations

BACK IN THE DAYLIGHT

Following the trail

A recorded story, with its history attached

NCpedia documents the regional tradition and the investigations attached to it. It records the US Geological Survey’s explanation involving distant train or automobile headlights, alongside other proposed causes. Different observations need not have one cause. The encyclopedia’s ghost tale and its scientific discussion should not be collapsed into a claim that every light has resisted explanation.

Why it stays with us

Distance is the story’s engine. A small moving brightness can be obvious enough to notice and too remote to identify. Folklore supplies intention in precisely that gap.
