Modern reported encounters; examined canine specimens identified

PBS’s Monstrum traces that change and the social setting of the original Puerto Rican reports. Examined carcasses associated with the later canine version have been identified as known animals, including coyotes and dogs affected by mange. That evidence addresses those specimens; it should not be presented as a laboratory test of every earlier witness statement. Livestock losses can be real while the proposed blood-draining culprit remains unverified.

Why it stays with us

The unsettling center of this story is a familiar enclosure after something has gone wrong. A farm is supposed to make animal life predictable. The legend supplies an intruder that seems to understand those arrangements well enough to defeat them, and then changes its own appearance before it can be pinned down.
