Reported encounters; commemorated, not verified

EBSCO’s overview notes the absence of definitive evidence, despite a substantial collection of reported encounters. The Mint’s page documents the coin accurately, but its promotional claims about eyewitness confirmation do not establish a new species. The early date is supplied by later summaries here, not by an inspected 1816 witness manuscript. Those are different levels of documentation and should not be silently exchanged.

Why it stays with us

The coin gives this file a useful reversal. Its existence is certain, while the animal pictured on it remains unverified. A community can preserve a story in metal without closing the question that makes people look across the lake in the first place.
