Baldoon’s Stones through the Window

At the McDonald farm, beams fell, stones flew and fires appeared in the local account. Wallaceburg’s museum keeps the Baldoon Mystery as a story that unsettled a whole community.

The account

The Baldoon story begins with work interrupted. Women weaving in a barn at John T. McDonald’s farm are said to have fled when three beams fell among them. The local account then gives the property a series of disturbances: unexplained noises, stones and bullets striking the house, and fires appearing without an ordinary explanation. The trouble seems to move from one part of daily life to another. A barn, a window and a household fire should be separate concerns; the haunting makes them feel like different expressions of the same hostile attention.

Following the trail

Wallaceburg and District Museum dates the beginning to 1830 and preserves the narrative as the Baldoon Mystery. The municipality also recognises it as part of local history and museum interpretation. The museum’s page includes a supernatural explanation involving a neighbour, but does not establish that accusation as fact. Its broad claim of contemporary Globe coverage also needs care, since no dated article is supplied there.

Why it stays with us

What survives most clearly is a community’s persistent story about a farm under siege. Keeping the disturbances distinct from the alleged culprit prevents an old accusation from becoming a new certainty.
