Dunster’s Man in Green

Somerset, England / Undated castle traditions recorded by the National Trust

Dunster’s haunted reputation includes floating lights and a man in green. Its collection of strange reports leaves the figure’s identity unresolved rather than supplying a convenient biography.

The account

Among Dunster Castle’s reported presences is a man in green. The colour is the hook: not an anonymous white sheet, but a figure with one ordinary, stubbornly specific detail. The National Trust also includes floating lights and an account of dungeon skeletons found chained together in its summary of the castle’s uncanny reputation. These are separate elements in a collection of stories, not evidence that the green-clad figure was one of those prisoners. Keeping that distinction leaves a more curious haunting: a person-shaped interruption whose name, purpose and relationship to the building remain unknown.

Following the trail

The Trust records these reports without giving an original witness, a first sighting date or an identified historical owner for the man in green. Its separate castle history establishes the long-lived defensive site. That history provides a setting, not a solved identity for the apparition.

Why it stays with us

The story works through incompleteness. Green clothing is easy to picture, while almost everything that would turn the figure into a conventional character is missing. It is the sort of detail that makes a listener look again at an otherwise empty doorway.
