Blickling’s Anniversary Ghost
Norfolk, England / Anne Boleyn died in 1536; annual-return tradition
Blickling’s ghost calendar has one especially crowded date: the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution, when tradition says she returns to the estate linked with her childhood.
A recorded story, with its history attached

The account
Some hauntings belong to a room. Blickling’s belongs to a date. The National Trust preserves the belief that Anne Boleyn returns on 19 May, the anniversary of her execution. The estate’s association with her family gives the apparition a different destination from her Tower of London stories. This is a return toward a possible beginning, rather than another appearance at the place where her life ended. The calendar supplies the suspense: an ordinary stretch of spring becomes a night on which absence is expected to behave differently.
Following the trail
The Trust’s history says Anne was likely born at Blickling, rather than presenting that birthplace as certain. It also explains that the familiar Jacobean façade was created in the 1620s, long after her death. The annual appearance is recorded as a belief, with no original sighting established by these sources.
Why it stays with us
That architectural gap matters. The returning figure would belong to an earlier house underneath the visitor’s mental picture of the present one. This is a story about an estate remembering someone across the replacement of its own walls.
